Q&A with Dear Colleen

Dear Colleen, When life gives you lemons, Homestyle Magazine

Following on from our feature on Colleen Pugh and her art label Dear Colleen, in our Dec/Jan issue we talk to her further about her quirky and innovative designs.

What process do you undertake to design each item?

As my background is in graphic design I am an idea lead designer and work best with a few constraints to build an idea around. I usually start by thinking up a little brief like ‘design a tote bag that has something to do with shopping’ and then I go from there. Once I have a clear idea the rest happens pretty quickly.

How do you decide which colours to use?

I just love bright colours, so my work usually ends up pretty vibrant. The exact choice is about helping communicate the over all idea of the piece, hence the piece about lemons is yellow.

What is your most popular print?

‘When Life Hands You Lemons Make A Gin And Tonic’ is by far my top selling print, but the ‘Dishes’ tea-towel is giving it a run for it’s money!

Tell us about the Dishes tea-towel. I understand there is a second one on the cards?

I started receiving a lot of requests put my designs on tea-towels, and I didn’t want to just shove any old design on a tea-towel, I wanted to try and do something a little smarter and that’s when I came up with Dishes. The second one has just been released and came about because I had lots of emails asking me to do a version with Colin Firth! I have a third one on the cards in honour of the royal wedding next year.

How did you make the move from paper prints to tote bags and tea-towels?

It was a market lead decision. There was a demand for more practical items rather than just prints so I just went with the flow!

What's next for Dear Colleen?

I’m planning to take January off to really work out what comes next. I know I want to get a good e-shop up and running – so that’s a huge thing on my to-do list. I’m also going to work hard to become more of a voice for Indie Designers. And beyond that I have lots of designs sitting in my notebooks just waiting for me to make the time to bring them to life!

With more designs set to be released throughout 2011, Dear Colleen is certainly one to watch and we can't wait to see what she comes up with next! You can follow Colleen through her blog or click here to purchase her work.

Lost Property

Lost Property by Gregory Smith

Gregory Smith's Lost Property website is a superb resource/showcase, described on the site as "Auckland's Alternative Modernist Architecture and History': A Work in Progress". Great images and indepth research by the site creator has kept me returning all week to check out the many gems of mid century design.

Gregory invites readers to contribute any knowledge or images of the architects, artists, homes or locations - you never know, you may well be unknowingly living in one now. If not, be sure there is much influence to be taken from the designs and techniques used in these historical pads when planning your new home in 2011.

One Stop Shop This Christmas

Stuck for Christmas gift ideas? Launched at the end of October Not Socks Gifts will have you covered. The unique New Zealand online gift inspiration service brings together fresh, thoughtful and handpicked ideas across a wide range of selected NZ online retailers.

"We asked hundreds of Kiwi's to tell us some of the worst gifts they'd ever received and socks topped the list. That's why we thought it fitting to call ourselves 'Not Socks' Gifts," explains Jude Burnside, Founder of Not Socks Gifts.

Inspired by the number of people who were having a hard time coming up with unique ideas or were struggling with where to find great gifts, the team behind the scenes have been blown away. "We got our thinking cap on and came up with the idea of becoming an online dating site for gifts - pulling together gifts, providing background information about each of them, sorting the gifts to that potential buyers could quickly find their perfect match, and then introducing them to the appropriate retailer," adds Jude.

The website is a great reference point for all that is new in gifts and online stores no matter what the occasion! Click here to begin your gift inspiration journey.

Dine By Design

Homestyle Magazine

Showcasing the culinary talents of Canterbury, Feast Of Canterbury was recently held at Riccarton House and hosted by the talented team at Taste Catering. As part of the Dine By Design competition, Alice and I were invited along as part of the judging panel. Joining forces with renowned designer Susie Paynter we were presented with four very different room set ups and given the challenging task of selecting a winner. Being judged on ambience, use of light and shade and the functionality of the space, local Canterbury designers were set the challenge to design and produce a workable dining space for eight or more people.

Taking away the People Choice Award, interior designer Alex Fulton, created a traditional setting with a difference. Having purchased a complete dining room set, including sideboard, chairs and table, from Trade Me she set about transforming them with a two-pot high gloss lacquer in bold, vibrant colours. From concept to completion her vision remained the same and the aim to make a statement with colour was certainly achieved. "Colour makes me happy and I wanted to share a different view point. You could take a photo of this room and in black & white it would look like a 'normal' Canterbury home dining room. But it's not!"

LEFT Furnish Scene RIGHT Theme Pro

Enteries from Furnish Scene and Theme Pro set the bar high with Furnish Scene producing a functional space inspired by the memories and experience of dining. Booth seating allowed for intimate and comfortable dining while the decor and accessories enforced the idea that no matter what culture you come from the experience of dinning is about breaking down barriers and celebrating with friends and family. While Theme Pro spend most of their days crafting elaborate commercial dining settings for clients, this was their chance to create an intimate space with a self selected theme. Inspired by cave-like dwellings and woodlands the space was a rustic and natural representation of their vision.

The Overall Award went to Charlie Hudson for her 'Steam Punk' Wonderland setting. Working with sister-in-law Sarah to produce the final result Charlie described herself as the amateur of the competition - having never gained any formal interior design training. "Our dining room is about showing friends how much they mean and is a collaboration of everything we love." From an ambient first impression to interactive details, this dining room set up was one we would all relish an invite too!

Charlie's winning design will be showcased in the April/May issue of homestyle as part of our Dining Room Special, so make sure you get your copy of this issue for an in-depth interview with this talented woman.
