22 February Christchurch Earthquake

in

Thank you to all of you who have been in touch since the 22 February Christchurch Earthquake. As many of you are aware our Christchurch office is located in the central city and was affected by the shaking that occurred that day. Thankfully all of our staff made it out of the city in one piece, and aside from minor damage to our homes we have all escaped relatively unscathed. Our thoughts and hearts are with the many of you out there who were not so lucky.

Since that fateful day we have been working, once again, from a living room in-order to provide you with your next installment of real homes and affordable style. While at times concentration was scarce, we managed to collate what we could from external backups and laptops and will have our April/May issue out on the stands for you next Monday, the 4th April - only a week later than scheduled. While we managed to complete the magazine, the In Focus pages, which appear at the end of the home features and showcase the floor plans and materials used in the home, are missing, so please feel free to contact me directly if you would like to know more about any of the houses and I will do my best to find the information for you; I can be reached on editor@homestyle.co.nz

As a result of the earthquake we have made the decision to merge our Auckland and Christchurch offices and will be relocating the Christchurch team to Auckland in the next week. This is an exciting time for homestyle and we are looking forward to sharing our discoveries of the Auckland region with you. For those of you located south of the Bombay Hills, do not fear, we will not be neglecting the rest of the country and will still be bringing you news, homes and the latest in design from around the country.

Please accept our apologies for the lack of blogging over the last few weeks, our focus has been on our upcoming issue and helping our fellow Cantabrians get back up and running. We are now back, so stay tuned in as we have lots to share with you!

After the recent earthquake, access to our Christchurch office from Lichfield Street, is blocked due to fallen bricks and masonry. The safety and status of the building is still to be confirmed.

Inside Issue 41

in
Homestyle Magazine

Putting together each issue of homestyle we have the pleasure of meeting homeowners, architects and designers who share with us their homes, which in turn we share with you our readers. Looking through our April/May issue of homestyle I realise it's not only innovative ideas for your home that we're sharing, but the work of a whole range of brilliant people from across the country.

First up the talented ladies of Dollop Puddings team up with Neat Meat and Stolen Rum to create a dinner party to celebrate the flavours of autumn. The recipe for Julia's delicious cider roasted pork belly main with zesty pear and apple sauce can be found here.

As part of our ongoing 'Made in New Zealand' series, we hear from five local designers including Kokako, Nuzilla, Starfish, PaperHands and Room Two about how they maintain sustanability in their businesses.

We also have our regular artist and designer profiles where we profile Mike Hewson, a Christchurch based artist who devastatingly lost his studio in the February 22 earthquake. And Bayley Collins of Bird In A Bunny Suit fame.

Doing It For Christchurch

With the huge number of companies, organisations and community groups getting in behind the Christchurch Earthquake appeal I thought I would share one of my favourite fundraisers with you - Clever Bastards 4 Christchurch

Utilising the vast number of creative Kiwi's associated with their online design store, Head Bastard Paul Kayser collated over 70 stunning and unique items with the aim to auction each one off. With furniture, to homewares to limited edition prints and jewellery there is something for every taste and it's all NZ Made! 100% of the proceeds from the auction will then be donated to the Christchurch Earthquake Red Cross appeal.

With iconic Kiwi designers like that of David Trubridge and Anna Church donating items what are you waiting for? My pick is the Hope for Canterbury limited edition screen print by Brad Novak. Not only is he one of my hot fav's at the mo, but it also features the symbolic postcard of Christchurch - the Catherdral. The auction closes soon, so it's time to get bidding! Click here to see the full range of items for auction.
