Design Influences Art Influences Design

Julie Paterson Designer Rugs

I've always been inspired by the work of Julie Paterson, the talented designer behind Cloth fabric in Australia. And she inspires once again with a new range for Designer Rugs where four of her best rug designs are overlaid with four of her key fabric designs to create eight new compositions that play with colour and scale. Visit Designer Rugs for more of her remixed designs.

Whiter shade of pale

Homestyle Magazine

If you loved the pale oak floors in the home of Jacqui Hudson in this issue, you’ll be interested to know they’ve been oiled, a great alternative to varnishing.

Says Jacqui, who runs fashion business The Room Downstairs: “The floors were oiled with natural oil, with a white wash in it – WOCA WoodCare Wood Floor Oil in white, from Design Denmark. It’s an eco-friendly solution compared to varnishing a floor and we liked it because it looks more Scandanavian. Now it’s done, we wash it with a special soap with white in it and that keeps the floors looking just great!”

A 2.3-litre container costs $144.20 from Design Denmark.

Emma Wright and Her Zest For Life

Emma Wright and Her Zest for Life

In this issue we meet artist Emma Wright, who had no intention of being an artist — but art wasn’t going to let her escape that easily. Fate and the paintbrushes conspired to ensure she lost her job as a brand strategist in the graphic design industry and she played out that old cliché of discovering her passion, a silver lining made up of shape, form and acrylic paints, while she was wondering what to do with the extra time she suddenly had on her hands.

Emma Wright stands between two works from her ‘Wright Without Thinking’ collection.

Her studio is based at  her Waiheke Island home.

Juggling motherhood with creating art and keeping up with the administrative side of business is tough but, Emma says, she has found her calling. She produces both small pieces such as the ones behind her and large-scale works. The painting behind her is called ‘Family’ and the small artwork with a black flower is called, quite simply, ‘Black flower’. For more from Emma pick up our latest issue and check out her website.

Marni 100 Chairs

Homestyle Magazine

During the Salone del Mobile in Milan earlier this year, fashion label Marni exhibited 100 chairs - an outdoor furniture collection consisting of 80 chairs, 10 deckchairs and 10 tables in 20 colors, using recycled PVC materials. The chairs were made in Colombia as part of a rehabilitation program where craftsmen along with former inmates worked together to produce the iron and plastic pieces.

During the Milan design week the project was exhibited and photographed by Fracesco Jodice and then sold at the Marni boutique in Milan. All the proceeds from the sales went to the ICAM institure in Milan, an organization which helps children of imprisoned mothers to live in an family environment.

Marni never fail to impress me with the colour palettes and innovation in their collections, and this project continues in that tradition.

A selection of some of the chairs and colourways, perfectly mismatched brights and pastels.

Wow! A cardboard office

Homestyle Magazine

I love the idea of this cardboard office designed by Alrik Koudenburg and Joost van Bleiswijk for the Nothing ad agency in Amsterdam. They use a No-screw, No-glue technique for this amazing interior fit-out.
