Treat for the Tastebuds + Last Chance to Win!

Auckland Foodshow

Do you love food? Want to learn tips from Al Brown and Ray McVinnie? Do we have a treat for you!

Foodies flock to the Auckland Food Show each year for gourmet taste treats, new culinary ideas and masterclasses with the top chefs from around the country. There’s so much to smell and savour...

The good news is that it’s that time again. I was lucky enough to join the glitterati of the food world who gathered at the Hilton Hotel last week for music and cocktails to launch the show in style.

I’m looking forward to one new feature this year, the Kenwood Kitchen ‘cakes, coffee and cocktails’, featuring free live demos by chefs and baristas from our best cafes, bars and restaurants. Top culinary experts will whip up mouth-watering treats, plus De'Longhi's barista aficionado will show you how to make beautiful coffee at home.

I met De’Longhi’s barista at an event last week and found that he has an encyclopedic knowledge of coffee techniques and styles.

You’ll also see demos by Al Brown, Josh Emett, Nici Wickes, Simon Gault, Julie Le Clerc, Richard Till and Ray McVinnie.

You won’t want to miss this great foodie experience, which runs from August 2 to 5 at the ASB Showgrounds, so head to www.foodshow.co.nz because tickets are on sale online right now. To compile your own itinerary, visit www.foodshow.co.nz.

Not just another wall sticker

Homestyle Magazine

Like me, you may be sick of the wall sticker craze, but The Wall Sticker Company have something a little different on offer that I thought was worth sharing. Based in Australia they create wall decals and wallpaper that are both completely removable. Such a great idea if you're afraid to commit to a bold patterned wallpaper, or renting your home!

Loving the geometric look of the Trellis and Houndstooth (which you can have in a custom colour.) And check out these sketchy illustrations by Chrissy Lau and Grace Lee... Super cute!

Images of Lost Childhood

Homestyle Magazine

I love how looking back into the past has created other-worldly images in award-winning Kiwi painter Evan Woodruffe’s evocative artworks. You can see his work at a new exhibition at Auckland’s Orexart Gallery, opening on July 24 from 5pm to 7pm and running until August 18, 2012. Pencil it into your diary now.

Evan’s new oil paintings in the exhibition entitled The Memory Archive show childhood adventure in a dream-like, slightly Gothic way, against eerie backgrounds.

Orexart Gallery is in Upper Khartoum Place, Kitchener Street, Auckland Central.

Evan received the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award 2011 and the Becroft Award 2003.

Pipi Cafe

Homestyle Magazine

A trip to Hawkes Bay wouldn't be complete without an evening spent at the charming Pipi Cafe in Havelock North. From their rustic Italian style pizzas to homely seasonal dishes Pipi's gets comfort food just right. And who could ignore the delightfully hotch potch interior where vintage wooden tables and benches in various shades of pink line the (also pink) walls.

Now you can recreate a little bit of Pipi's Cafe at home with Pipi The Cookbook from owner and chef Alex Tylee. And with Brian Culy's photography capturing the atmosphere and delicious food you're bound to be inspired.

Thanks to Random House, this issue we feature a taster of recipes from Pipi The Cookbook, and this Wintergreen Soup is one of my favourites, especially for a warming weekend lunch.

Wintergreen soup
Serves 4–6
We are very lucky in that we have a supplier, Epicurean, who sells wonderful bags of mixed wintergreen: cavolo nero, kale, different silverbeets and spinach. But you can just as easily make up your own mixture from whatever is available. This is also a great opportunity to use things like nettle and beetroot and dandelion leaves, which are all great to eat and very good for you.

100g butter
1 tablespoon oil
4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into 4
2 leeks, tough leaves discarded, then cut up
5 cloves garlic, peeled
400g mixed wintergreen leaves, tough
 stems removed
1.2 litres water
1 teaspoon salt
juice of ½ a lemon
½ whole nutmeg, grated

Melt the butter and oil in a saucepan on a low heat, then add the potato, leeks and garlic. Stir until the vegetables are covered with the oily butter and then very slowly cook them for 5 minutes.
Add the leaves to the pan, again stirring well to coat. Now slowly cook for another 15 minutes, stirring every so often so the vegetables do not stick to the bottom of the pan. Then pour in the water and simmer for a further 20 minutes. Now add the salt, lemon juice and nutmeg. Blend it all together in a food processor until very smooth.
Reheat to serve. When you reheat the soup, taste for seasoning and if you feel like it, add ½ cup of cream for a richer, smoother flavour — but it is still great without it.
At Pipi we reheat the soup, then roll out a circle of pizza dough and place it over the bowl, putting a knob of garlic butter on top of the dough. We cook and brown the dough in the pizza oven (this would take about 9 minutes in a domestic oven at 250˚C).
