Making a mark

From a simple concept to a revolutionary world first, the Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer™ Dishwasher turns 20 and celebrates with a covetable collaboration.

Today’s dishes have some fine minds to thank for their star treatment. Some major innovation came with the territory two decades ago when Fisher & Paykel’s engineers got to thinking about the practicality of the filing cabinet and developed the concept that changed washing-up forever. Propelling the New Zealand company onto the world stage, the DishDrawer™ was the best thing to happen to dishes since the dishwasher.

Who can argue with the wisdom and necessity of an appliance that makes
one of life’s most tedious chores as much of a pleasure as possible? And after 20 years of dirty dishes and awards won around the globe, the DishDrawer™ still stacks up – in a big way.

“The DishDrawer™ represents a really unique and ergonomic product,” says Lauren Palmer, Fisher & Paykel’s Chief Designer for Cooking and Dishwashing Products. “The drawer format means you’re not bending and lifting when you’re loading and unloading and the racking is really flexible, so we know it can accommodate the dishes people have at home.”

Just as the process of ‘doing the dishes’ has changed over these 20 years, the kinds of dishes we enjoy in our homes has altered too – what could be better than serving food on beautiful handcrafted ceramics, particularly those made by Wellington ceramicist Felicity Donaldson of Wundaire?

Admiring the wabi-sabi nature of Felicity’s creations, Lauren says Fisher & Paykel chose to collaborate with Wundaire ceramics “because we really love the juxtaposition of Felicity’s beautifully imperfect work against 20 years of engineering refinement that’s gone into the DishDrawer™.”

To commemorate the DishDrawer™ reaching its milestone, Felicity has made a seven-place 20th Anniversary Dinner Set – watch the video for a peak behind the scenes of its creation in Wundaire’s Wellington studio.
