It’s that time again, with the end of the year rapidly approaching and the flurry of activity that brings – final work commitments, festive get-togethers and shopping for loved ones – all while looking forward to those few precious days of holiday R&R. But why put all your eggs in one basket? When entertaining in summer, rather than rushing out and about, it can sometimes be more leisurely to host friends and family at yours – the key is in the preparation. See page 38 for ways to create easy, tropical-inspired table settings and mouthwatering dishes for a make-ahead brunch and help-yourself platters.
It’s hardly breaking news that Kiwis have a love of monochrome – it’s a combination that’s imbued in our national psyche. But this issue, our four hero houses offer a masterclass in how to use a black and white scheme as the foundation on which to make your mark on your interior. In our Auckland cover home (see page 76), Charlotte and Phil Clark complemented black and white with a palette of grey, green and blue and natural materials including linen and wool, to bring texture and depth to their villa renovation. Meanwhile, at Nicky and Mark van der Poel’s new home in Taranaki (see page 90), the palette was enhanced by character-adding elements like laser-cut aluminium and keruing plywood.
This year, I’ll be wrapping objects crafted by local makers to put under the tree.
