How much wood…

Michelle Halford of The Design Chaser shows how to work timber into your kitchen in more ways than one.

In association with Fisher & Paykel

THE INSPIRATION:
I love the calm, earthy feel and clean lines of this simple Scandinavian-style kitchen. Designed by Daniel Lee and photographed by Rory Gardiner, it fits my minimalist aesthetic and celebrates natural materials, featuring raw concrete and gorgeous Douglas fir planks by renowned Danish brand Dinesen. More and more I’m seeing these boards being used not just as flooring but also on walls and in cabinetry, helping to create continuity. Here, rounded forms such as that of the utensils and lighting soften the space, and the open shelving is ideal for showcasing your favourite kitchen accessories.

EXPERT STYLE TIPS:
Au naturel One of the things I love about monochrome interiors is that they don’t need to exclude natural materials such as wood and concrete. In fact, these elements add warmth to a neutral palette and have the added benefit of ageing beautifully.
Photo magic To channel the Scandi feel, I’ve chosen a photographic print by Brooke Holm, who shoots striking landscapes with an artistic edge. The naturalistic colours work well with the pared-back palette.
Chic & sleek Finer details such as the tapware tie in with the stainless steel of the Fisher & Paykel appliances. The ActiveSmart™ French Door Fridge is designed to maximise access, with wide shelves and a spacious freezer. The ultimate clean-up companion, the DishDrawer™ Dishwasher has multiple programmes and handy adjustable racks.
