THE DESIGN

Natural beauty welcomes you at the top of the stairs when you enter the living area of this new beachfront home, and the matarazzo marble used in the kitchen is the ultimate complement to the view. Installing it was not without its challenges, though — the 1.4-tonne island required the floor joists of this multi-storey, architecturally designed home to be re-engineered so they could bear the weight.
‘Natural’, ‘classy’, ‘textural’, ‘luxurious’ and ‘relaxed’ were among the key words the owner of this property listed in their brief, and all these boxes have been ticked here. This kitchen has two personalities: by day, it’s earthy, calm and warm, capturing the all-day sun that makes melamine the ideal material for the cabinetry, offering better protection against fading than timber veneer. In the evening as the sun begins to set, the marble comes to life through the strategic placement of LED lighting that transforms this space into a sleek and sexy entertainer’s dream.

THE DESIGN

Meeting the request for a dark, masculine, minimalist and low-maintenance ensuite during the renovation of a large home, this bathroom is part of the apartment-style main suite that takes pride of place on the third floor.
Every detail in this room has been carefully considered. The timber ceiling is stained to match the wood that appears throughout the house, as well as the 150-year-old reclaimed French oak flooring. The large shower features several shower heads, some with a bespoke gunmetal finish, and glass doors and handles imported from Italy. The freestanding stone bath sits on a pedestal floor made from Neolith stone that includes a heated pad to keep the bath hot. The vanity is set out from the wall, so when the LED lighting cascades down the walls made from bluestone cut and laid in random sizes and lengths, it appears to float. Lighting within each drawer makes nighttime access easy.

THE DESIGN (ABOVE)

The owners of this space wanted it to look not like a kitchen but a piece of art, with functionality secondary to artistry. The resulting sculptural island is used in place of a dining table by the avid entertainers. To create it, a prototype was built from MDF for their approval; concrete fabricators then built form work around it to copy its exact dimensions, before casting it in glass-reinforced concrete.
There are minimal appliances in this kitchen, but it does include storage, a laundry and a toolbox, as the home doesn’t have a garage. The aesthetic needed to be sympathetic to the rest of the modernised villa, so a wall of full-height cabinetry doors was devised and detailed using the same mouldings as the home’s internal doors. The central doors are split, allowing for essentials such as a drinks cabinet.

THE DESIGN (BELOW)

In the heart of an open-plan living area inside a newly built lodge-style holiday home, the second of Morgan Cronin’s winning kitchens features concrete walls softened by cabinetry in planked American oak. Along with the aged-brass panels used on the front and sides of the island, this complements the granite benchtops and splashback that complete the simple material palette. There aren’t any handles in this kitchen and even the door to the scullery appears to be another cabinet. A secondary wall of cabinetry adjacent to the island provides additional storage and houses twin, waist-height ovens.

THE DESIGN

Clever thinking was needed for this ensuite created on a budget in a five-bedroom, architecturally designed home on a kānuka-studded plot overlooking Lake Wanaka. It was imagined and constructed (apart from the plumbing, electrics and tiling) by its artist and builder owners to become cave-like. Inspired by the underground cathedral at the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland, with an added twist of clean-lined modernism, the design and materials in this space resonate with the surrounding natural landscape.
The low-maintenance finishes and double walk-in shower were must-haves, as was the bath; subtle lighting here is critical to ensure a relaxing soak with a view of the lake and mountains.
