Reading list: our new favourite books

Beyond the West (Gestalten, $115)
Architecture in Asia, Africa and Latin America is given long overdue attention in this book (out on September 1), which examines how design professionals in these regions are responding creatively to societal, economic and environmental issues. There are such incredible projects on these pages — like the school that floats on a lagoon in flood-stricken Nigeria — that it’s impossible to put it down without feeling truly inspired.

MAIN IMAGE As seen in Beyond the West, trees grow through the walls of the SFER IK museum in Tulum, Mexico. Designed by Roth Architecture, the partially open structure is supported on stilts that allow wildlife to wander underneath it.

The Less Waste No Fuss Kitchen by Lindsay Miles (Hardie Grant, $33)
The environmental crisis might feel out of your hands, but in fact, your own kitchen is a place in which you can make a real difference. Here, you’ll discover things like how to buy produce that’s easier on the Earth and store food so it lasts longer — and it’s not about being perfect, it’s about small daily deeds because, as Lindsay says, there’s no change without action, people.

The New Traditional (Gestalten, $75)
If you wonder if your love of the good old days and ways is a bit backwards, you’ll enjoy this reminder that you’re actually ahead of the curve. People around the world who are interested in preserving long-established rituals, practices and techniques are profiled in this tome, and there are some pretty cool characters among them.
