Young & hungry

Tricks and tech to give ambitious up-and-comers all the luxury of a large kitchen, but compact.

In association with Fisher & Paykel.

THE YOUNG PROFESSIONAL LAYOUT

Small-space living calls for some big ideas. Most efficient for a compact kitchen in an open-plan area is a single-row layout, which sees appliances and cabinetry contained along one wall. This also allows room for a dining table; we chose a petite, circular style with no hard edges to bump into and maximum legroom. Wire mesh shelving offers storage and display and uses the room’s full height.

THE LOOK

A savvy trick as old as time, the light colours and integrated appliances in this scheme make the space seem anything but tight. Indulging in a few high-end pieces ups the luxe factor without overspending; you don’t need a lot of textural granite to turn a splashback into a focal point that ties in with your other materials and hues. Add a succinct edit of curios you can admire and put to good use.

THE APPLIANCES

The best things come in the small-space- friendly packages that are Fisher & Paykel’s compact appliances, which don’t compromise on form or function. This integrated multi-temperature CoolDrawer™ has five food modes, from fridge to wine to freezer; the high-performance single DishDrawer™ runs quickly and quietly, so it won’t disturb the peace; and below the cooktop that can be mixed and matched to include induction and gas, the oven has a comprehensive nine cooking functions.

DOUBLE DUTY

Fisher & Paykel’s washer/dryer combo provides everything you need in a single machine — and it doesn’t require venting, so you can happily tuck it away in a cupboard.
